Sonae’s main interests at EU level focus on policy and legislative developments that affect the retail sector and the broader consumer-facing economy. In particular, we monitor and engage with proposals related to the following areas:
- Single Market and consumer policy, including initiatives under the New Consumer Agenda, the Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act, and efforts to remove remaining barriers to retail in the Single Market;
- Sustainability and circular economy, including legislation on packaging and packaging waste, eco-design for sustainable product and waste framework directives;
- Food and product safety, such as revisions to the General Food Law, proposals on front-of-pack nutrition labelling, and regulation of ultra-processed foods or substances of concern in non-food products;
- Digital and data policies, notably the Data Act, AI Act, and Cyber Resilience Act, given their relevance for innovation, logistics, and customer experience in retail and technology investments;
- Employment and skills policies, especially in relation to youth employment, gender equality, work-life balance, and the future of work in large-scale retail operations;
- Tax and customs, including proposals for VAT in the digital age, single customs window, and any changes that impact cross-border retail operations;
- Financial services and investment frameworks, insofar as they relate to consumer credit, retail investment products, and innovation financing in Europe.
We are particularly attentive to how these initiatives impact competitiveness, sustainability, and consumer trust across the European retail ecosystem.
