BirdLife Europe and Central Asia is deeply concerned about the upcoming proposal on simplification of administrative burdens in environmental legislation. Over the past two years, a growing number of initiatives have been introduced which, under the guise of simplification or reducing burdens on certain economic sectors, have in fact weakened the core objectives of nature conservation and eroded the principles of environmental democracy. Simplification must not be misused as a pretext to dilute, weaken or remove existing EU environmental targets and obligations.
